My introduction to the paleo diet and indeed the paleo cookbook started at the gym. There is this one guy who trains like every day and is ripped to shreds. He isn't a meat head guy, just a really fit, slim and muscular guy. Sick of my beer belly, I finally plucked up the courage to interupt his rountine and asked him how he maintained such a physique and what I might do to shape up. "Cut out grains and dairy" was his answer. Wow, I thought, that simple huh!? He explained to me over the course of about 5 minutes the history of the human diet and how the body reacts negatively to certain foods that are alien to the digestive system. So, the next day, after his advice and some internet research I started the caveman diet, or the paleo diet as it is commonly known.

After a few days I was like, man what the hell am I going to eat!  No grains, no dairy, no legume and no presevatives, that's like 90% of my old diet!  And that's when I got online and started digging for recipes. The Paleo Cookbook was probably the third book I came accross. It appealed far more than the others because of it's professionalism. The pictures were great, you get an 8-week meal planner with the package, and a bonus herbs and spices guide, which is extremely useful in making meals even more exciting. What most appealed though was having a recipe for every day of the week, meaning I didn't have to think too much about what I was going to cook of an evening and there is always something new to cull any repetition. It also helps my wife with ideas for cooking seeing as I have to avoid pasta and rice, which used to be a staple part of my diet.

My Paleo Cookbook Experiencepaleo cookbook review

Being a fan of red meat I was happy to see Bacon and Marinara Meatloaf on the menu and a plethora of other lean meat dishes. Ideally you are supposed to buy organic grassfed meats, but budget wise we can't always do that as a family.  I am also a big fan of the Roasted Chicken with Grapes and Mustard, and my wife being half Mexican really digs the Mexican Chicken, too - it must be said that has become a more than twice monthly table feature.

Most people undertaking the paleo diet struggle with what to eat for breakfast, as we all get used to cereals and bread. Remember you can always cook some extra dinner the nioght before and have that in the morning, although using the Paleo Cookbook we tend to have almond flour pancakes or grain free oatmeal, and of course the simple fruit salad. There are also a range of smoothies in the book including a lovely coffee one and a Macademia and Avacado one, which sounds weird but is really awesome. From dips and condiments to desserts like Double Choclate Cookies and Gingersnaps, this book is superb in terms of ease of cooking and choice. I can happily report that I naturally lost 10kg and seem to be keeping it off following this diet. Simone, my wife, was so impressed she has undertaken the paleo diet too.
